Why Choose Carpet? The Benefits

Carpets vs Hard flooring

The debate over which is better, carpet or hard flooring, hard flooring or carpet remains a highly sensitive, yet very topical, subject for both commercial and residential markets alike.

Articles in early 2004 appeared in four leading UK national newspapers headlining accidents on hard flooring have increased by over 300% in the last five years (research carried out by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents – RoSPA – February 2004). This may have focused attention on one aspect of choosing floor covering but there are many other benefits when specifying carpet over hard floor covering.
The Benefits of Choosing Carpet

The benefits derived from selecting good quality carpets in any type of application are manifold: what other type of floor covering will provide sound insulation, energy savings, underfoot comfort, a safe, non-slip floor, and be easy to clean and install, with good wear and non-allergenic properties, while still providing the consumer with the flexibility for individual creative design?
Sound Insulation

Noise pollution in houses can have a serious effect on the well being of all its users and in this respect a fitted carpet plays an important role virtually eliminating impact noise through sound absorption.

Therefore the use of carpet enhances sound absorption, and the conduction of impact noise can be reduced by up to 30dB, as opposed to comparative values for smooth floor coverings which lay between 5-15dB.

For example, the benefits of noise reduction can be felt throughout the house. In particular, in flats and on first/second floors when noise of hard flooring can be heard most by people on lower floors.
Energy Saving

Carpets can make a measurable contribution to retaining the warmth in a room and therefore saving energy. Carpets have low heat conduction and are natural thermal insulators creating a heat barrier.

As a result, as much as 10% of the heat in a room which would be dissipated with smooth floor covering is retained in the room by the carpet.

This, combined with the outstanding underfoot comfort of a carpet, can result in a considerable reduction in the use of heating in the transition from a warm to a cold season. It has been estimated that up to 30 days heating can be saved, resulting in an energy saving of around 4-6% and a consequent reduction in heating bills.

Safety covers two aspects – reduced slippage, especially when wet, and a decrease in stress on joints The soft resilient fibers of a carpet provide a cushioning effect and excellent orthopedic properties.

The underfoot safety of carpets is an important feature, both in the home and the workplace. Infants and the elderly in particular benefit from the non-slip aspects of carpets and, in the event of a fall, the soft resilience of the carpet lowers the risk of injury.

With their superb dust-trapping properties, carpets are conducive to a healthy living environment. Dust settles quickly and is then securely held by the pile fibers of the carpet until it is vacuumed again.

The dust is not disturbed by incoming air draughts, and this means that the dust content of the indoor air is kept low. This is particularly important since dust particles also act as carriers for germs, allergens and other air contaminants.

Allergies due to carpeting are unknown. The myth that carpets promote dust-mite allergies is untrue, because these are attributable to the faeces of the house-dust mite – the actual allergen itself. Bedding and bed linen contain up to 70% more house-mites than carpets. Regular vacuuming and cleaning, together with adequately ventilated and dry rooms, means that it is virtually impossible for a carpet to contain, entrap or transmit allergens.
Cleaning and Maintenance

Carpets are quick and easy to install allowing the consumer considerable scope for fashionable creativity – whether they are used in a wall-to-wall design or in combination with other flooring surfaces.

Most quality carpets have excellent wear properties, which means that many years of comfortable service can be expected if the right carpet is selected in the first instance.

Carpet Benefits

If you have ever woken upon a cold morning or watched a toddler tumble while taking its first few steps, then you already know why carpet is the flooring choice most favoured by homeowners.

Carpet is the most practical, fashionable and versatile flooring choice, and it accounts for more than half of all flooring purchases made each year. In fact, carpet has outsold every other type of floor covering for nearly 50 years.

Carpet offers many advantages that other flooring choices do not. Here are a few of the unique benefits that carpeting adds to your home - some you probably haven't thought of!

Warmth - Carpet is the ideal choice for bedrooms, family rooms and other areas where warmth underfoot is crucial.

Insulation - Carpet and carpet padding provide an extra layer of insulation between floors of your home. In fact, depending on its density and weight, carpet contributes to the R-value of a home, adding to its energy efficiency.

Safety - Carpet provides a non-slip surface to prevent accidents and a natural cushion in the event of a fall. This is especially important for young children and the elderly.

Sound Reduction - Carpeting reduces noise better than any other flooring choice. In fact, carpet dampens noise in three ways: reducing surface noise from foot traffic, absorbing airborne sound and blocking transmission of sound between floors. These qualities are especially valuable in apartments and semi-detached homes.

Surface Cosmetics - The addition of carpeting to a room can disguise existing floor damage and hide other irregularities such as uneven or warped floors.

Easy Care - Today's carpets are more stain-resistant than ever before, making cleanups of even the worst spills a breeze.

Cleaner Air - Scientific studies have shown that carpet can improve indoor air quality by trapping potential allergy-causing particulates - if the carpet is properly cleaned and maintained.

Variety of Uses - Carpets aren't only for floors! Carpeting can be easily added to stairs, steps, walls, posts and other irregular and non-level surfaces, with no worry that it'll slip, lift or buckle.

Decorating Flexibility
- Carpeting is the foundation of any room's dcor. And because it is available in so many textures and colours, carpet creates an unlimited number of possibilities for decorating. From neutral tones to rich solids to patterned carpets that complement furniture, carpet is the first step in your decorating plans.

Low Cost - Carpet offers an economical alternative to many other flooring choices, and installation costs are typically less than for hard surfaces.

Long Life - Today's carpets are remarkably durable and will outlast many other varieties of floor covering.

CARPET TILES "Pros and Cons"

CARPET TILES, also known as carpet squares are an alternative to the standard rolls of carpet. Though they are much easier for a do-it-yourselfer to install on their own, they come with pros and cons. They are typically used in commercial applications, such as in schools and airports, but are becoming more common in residential applications. When deciding whether to use a carpet roll or to opt for carpet tiles, there are several things to consider.

Styles of Carpet Tile

Carpet tiles come in many different styles and colors. They are available in: various sizes, multiple fiber types, pile styles, manufactured types, and adhesive types. This means you can likely find a carpet tile equivalent for the roll of carpet you were considering or would have otherwise used in your home. The major difference between standard carpet rolls is the tile backing material. The backing material options include: vinyl, fiberglass, vinyl/fiberglass, urethane, woven polypropylene, and recycled vinyl, though there may be others. More important than the type of backing is the manufacturer’s warranty, which will protect the investment against shrinking, buckling and curling. When this happens to the tiles, it not only creates an eyesore, but may present a safety hazard because it is easier to trip and fall.

Choosing Your Carpet Tiles

When choosing carpet tiles for your room, beyond considering the color and style, it is important to remember the bigger picture. Looking at one tile may sell you on it, but envisioning the floor as a whole will help keep the finished floor from looking like a crazy pattern. If you plan on using tiles to create a pattern, envisioning the entire floor will ensure the pattern comes out how you intended. It is also important to consider the sizes of the tiles, as they are available in multiple options. The tile size will impact the overall look of the finished floor.

Styles of Carpet Tile

Pros of Carpet Tiles

Carpet tiles have several benefits including:

• Easier installation than standard rolled carpet. Do-it-yourself kits are available. These kits make it simple with instructions, and even measuring the tiles for the installation.

• Easier cleaning and care. The tiles do not require any padding or glue to install them. Individual carpet tiles can be removed for cleaning, and replaced when dry. If one area of the floor becomes damaged, the tile can be replaced without replacing the entire floor.

• Carpet tiles allow for freedom with design, allowing you to give more depth and texture to a room

Cons of Carpet Tiles

Carpet tiles also come with disadvantages, including:

• The seams of the carpet tiles are more easily seen when compared to wall-to-wall carpet rolls. Without careful installation, the seams could appear uneven.

• Carpet tiles are less durable to wall-to-wall carpet, meaning they will wear down faster. When used in high traffic areas, they are more likely to come up at the edges.

• Like their carpet roll counterpart, they are not ideal for areas subject to moisture where mold and mildew may become an issue. The subfloor needs to be clean and even for the best possible installation result.

• Carpet tiles are generally more expensive than carpet rolls.

With this information in mind, you will be able to make the best decision for your budget and particular situation.

Surprising Health Facts About Carpets

While there are few nicer feelings than the texture of a soft carpet beneath your bare feet, many people choose not to have them because they worry about health issues. What many people think are health facts are actually misconceptions and it is these that stop people from enjoying the luxury of a soft carpet beneath their toes. We debunk some of the health and safety myths that people have about carpets and provide the facts that are sure to make you more comfortable about having carpets in your home.

Myth: Carpets can make allergies worse.

Fact: This is an interesting and commonly misunderstood health fact. Carpets hold substances that are linked with allergies tightly in their weaving, which prevent them from becoming airborne thereby lowering risk exposure. Carpets have a filter-like effect which traps the allergens and these can be removed by thoroughly vacuuming the carpets and by using a quality carpet shampoo. Ensure that your vacuum cleaner has an efficient filter to minimise the risk of the allergens becoming released into the air again.

Myth: Carpets tend to grow mould.

Fact: While there are a number of health concerns associated with mould, the fact is that mould can only grow where there is excess moisture and dirt. This along with poor cleaning habits does make it more likely to grow, which is why it is important to clean your carpets regularly and clean up and dry any spills immediately. Ensuring that your vacuum filter is in good condition will ensure more thorough cleaning of your carpet.

Myth: Carpets reduce indoor air quality.

Fact: After repeated toxicological testing it has been concluded that fitting carpets in your home will not reduce the air quality or present any health concerns.
